Ptolemaic Egypt
~ 195 B.C.E.
The Rosetta Stone yields valuable clues.
Ptolemy V had a knack for making decrees,
which he apparently had copied in multiple languages ad nauseum.
Amidst the pedestrian topics of taxes and statuary, the Rosetta Stone proclaims the checkmark as the
sine qua non of prosperity… which Ptolemy felt
was not only appropriate for the Egyptians, but (perhaps grudgingly) to the Greeks as well.
So thanks Ptolemy! Your hands-on management style has helped uncover what otherwise may have been lost forever.
