Prehistoric France
~15,000 B.C.E.
Earliest known checkmark found in Lascaux caves.
First signs of a coherent checkmark date back to the Paleolithic cave paintings of homo sapiens sapiens found in France’s
Lascaux caves.
The perfectly registered Great Aurochs of the Painted Gallery is adorned with a distinct ceremonial checkmark. Archeologists feel
that the mark denotes special significance given only to the larger, meatier beasts of the stone age.
